A PIECE OF BERLIN HISTORY
THE HISTORY OF THE SPREESPEICHER
The Spreespeicher was designed by the architect Friedrich Krause, who is responsible for civil engineering for the city of Berlin. After six years of construction, the granary was inaugurated in 1913 right next to the cold store known as the “egg storage”. With a huge hipped roof, clinker brick surfaces and natural stone, he gave the building its unique face to this day. However, as the city was unable to take care of the operation of the port facilities in the long term due to financial difficulties, the Spreespeicher changed hands together with other buildings to today’s Berliner Hafen- und Lagerhausgesellschaft mbH, BEHALA for short. Despite multiple damage in the east port during the Second World War, the Spreespeicher was used as a cargo handling point for the Wehrmacht,
With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, it lost its economic importance. Up until this time, the Spreespeicher served as a warehouse. Planning work for the modern conversion followed, which was implemented in 2000 when the building permit was granted and completed in 2001. Thanks to high-quality materials such as granite, shell limestone and hard-fired bricks from Bunzlau, the building was able to be restored as best as possible and adapted to the standard of a modern office building in terms of monument preservation without losing the essential appearance of the former granary.
With a history of over 100 years, the historic Spreespeicher offers a location that scores with its special location in the middle of Berlin’s media district in the trendy Friedrichshain district as well as its location on the banks of the Spree with a view of the Oberbaumbrücke. Not far from the Mercedes-Benz-Arena, near MTV and Universal Music, the Spreespeicher is a unique place then as it is today, with a special flair.
